BALLAST FREE PICO-MICRO HYDEL GENERATION
This system was designed and developed in 2014. Conventional micro hydel plants need to have a rather fixed load so that the voltage and frequency is reasonably regulated. However, the loads in a community is neither known nor fixed. Therefore, micro hydel plants have buffer loads (heater coils immersed in the flowing river water) which will be turned ON or OFF according to the load current drawn from the micro hydel plant. These loads are called ballast loads and are quite expensive and also the weak link in the system. Apart from this, the micro hydel generator will always be handling full rated power. This is quite a stress (both thermal and electrical) on the system. This system avoids ballast loads totally and draws energy from the flowing river to the extent of load demand. This way the generator machine handles power only that required by the load and therefore runs cool most of the time. This setup can be used in the western ghats and other mountainous communities where there are numerous streams. These pico or micro systems can be used run-of-the-mill without building any dams or other watersheds.
